Adho Mukha Svanasana is both a rejuvenating and strengthening posture. Although it is a semi-inverted pose, it rests the heart and refreshes the brain, making it ideal for overcoming fatigue and restoring vitality.

Benefits of Adho Mukha Svanasana

  • Relieves fatigue and restores energy, making it especially beneficial after physical or mental exertion.

  • Refreshes the brain by increasing blood flow to the head without the full inversion of a headstand, helping to calm the mind.

  • Strengthens the arms, shoulders, wrists, and legs, developing endurance and stability throughout the body.

  • Lengthens and stretches the entire back body, including the spine, hamstrings, calves, and Achilles tendons, improving flexibility.

  • Helps correct stiffness in the shoulders and opens the chest, encouraging better posture.

  • Tones the abdominal organs and may aid digestion through the elongation of the torso.

  • Relieves pain and stiffness in the heels and helps strengthen the arches of the feet.

  • Can reduce backache by creating traction through the spine when practised with proper alignment.

  • Calms the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting mental clarity.

  • Prepares the body for more advanced inversions and standing poses by teaching the actions of extending the spine and grounding through the hands and feet.

Iyengar's therapeutic observations

Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar also notes that the pose can be particularly helpful for:

  • Mild depression and mental exhaustion.

  • Recovery from overexertion.

  • Menstrual discomfort (when practised with appropriate support).

  • High blood pressure when the head is supported on a bolster, block, or folded blanket under the guidance of an experienced teacher.

Practice note (Iyengar method)

In the Iyengar tradition, emphasis is placed on:

  • Fully extending the spine rather than forcing the heels to the floor.

  • Pressing the palms evenly into the mat and lifting the hips high.

  • Keeping the arms and legs active and straight without locking the joints.

  • Using props such as a wall, blocks, ropes, or a bolster when necessary to achieve correct alignment and therapeutic benefits.

These points are based on the teachings in Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on Yoga and the therapeutic principles developed in the Iyengar Yoga tradition.
